At just 16 years old, Fatima from Mogovolas district was overwhelmed by feelings of depression after the birth of her first child. She struggled to cope with the demands of motherhood, feeling isolated and hopeless. “I didn’t understand what was happening to me. I felt empty inside, and I didn’t know how to be a good mother,” Fatima shared with tears in her eyes.
When Fatima joined the “Strengthening the Mental Health and Responsiveness of Caregivers to Young Children” project, she was introduced to stress management techniques, psychosocial support, and counseling. “The training taught me how to recognize my emotions and how to manage them. I learned that it was okay to ask for help,” Fatima said, reflecting on her transformation.
With the support of trained professionals and peer groups, Fatima began to overcome her depression. “At first, I felt skeptical, but as I applied what I learned, I began to feel lighter and more connected to my baby,” she explained.
Fatima’s journey has not been easy, but she is now a more confident and mentally resilient mother. “I can smile again and care for my baby with love,” she said, a hopeful smile replacing the sadness she once felt. Fatima is no longer defined by depression; she is thriving as a mother, stronger than ever before.
